💡 AI Pro Tip: Feed the Memory Monster

When you’re deep in a world-building session or a complex RPG, the biggest mistake you can make is hitting that "New Chat" button every time you sit down to play.

If you want your AI Dungeon Master or NPC companion to remember that you lost your left eye in a dragon fight three sessions ago, you have to stay within the same chat string.

Why Persistence Matters

Most modern LLMs use a "context window." Think of this as the AI’s short-term memory. As long as you stay in one thread, the AI carries the history of your choices, your inventory, and the specific "vibe" of your story forward.

  • Consistency: The AI maintains the established tone and NPC personalities.

  • Contextual Recall: You can reference past events without re-explaining them.

  • Evolution: The AI "learns" your playstyle over time within that specific thread.

🛠️ The "Charles Duncan" Strategy

If your chat string starts getting too long and the AI begins to "forget" the very beginning (the dreaded context drift), don't just start over. Use a World State Summary:

  1. Summarize: Periodically write a brief recap of the current state of the game (Current Location, Key NPCs, Major Plot Points).

  2. Pin it: Drop that summary into the chat.

  3. Prompt: Tell the AI: "Using the summary above as our current world state, let’s continue the adventure."

Editor’s Note: Starting a new thread is like giving your DM amnesia. Keep the thread alive to keep the story deep.

What kind of RPG setting are you currently building—is it high fantasy, or are we leaning into some gritty sci-fi?
